Johann Schenk

Johann Schenk

Baroque Composer and Viol Player

Johann Schenk was a Dutch composer and viol player who lived during the Baroque period, with his life spanning from around 1660 to after 1712. Not much is known about his early life or training, but he became active in Amsterdam and achieved some recognition for his work. Schenk is primarily known for his compositions for the viola da gamba, an instrument that was very popular during the 17th century. His most significant work is perhaps "Le Nymphe di Rheno," a collection of duets for viola da gamba, which showcases his skill in writing for this instrument. While he was not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, Schenk's contributions to the repertoire of the viola da gamba were valuable during a time when the instrument was at its peak in terms of popularity and development.
