François Campion

François Campion

Baroque-era French Guitarist and Composer

François Campion was a French Baroque composer and guitarist, born around 1686 and believed to have died in 1747. Not much is known about his life, but he was an important figure in the development of guitar music during the early 18th century. Campion published a significant treatise on guitar playing, "Nouvelles découvertes sur la Guitarre," which included instructions on playing and a collection of compositions. This treatise is notable for its exploration of the use of campanella, a technique that allows for a ringing sound reminiscent of bells. His works often bridged French and Spanish styles, reflecting the cultural exchange of the era.
