John Dowland

John Dowland

Elizabethan Lute Composer and Songwriter

John Dowland (1563 – buried 20 February 1626) was an English Renaissance composer, lutenist, and singer. He is best known for his melancholic lute songs, including his seminal work "Flow My Tears," which comes from his second book of songs. Dowland's music often reflected the Elizabethan fashion for melancholy, and he cultivated a reputation for being a somber and introspective composer and musician. His collection "Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares Figured in Seaven Passionate Pavans," published in 1604, is among his most celebrated works and showcases his mastery of the consort music genre.
