Johann Joseph Fux

Johann Joseph Fux

Baroque Austrian Composer and Music Theorist

Johann Joseph Fux (1660–1741) was an Austrian composer, music theorist, and pedagogue of the late Baroque era. He is most famous for his treatise on counterpoint, "Gradus ad Parnassum" ("Steps to Parnassus"), which has influenced Western classical music for centuries. Fux served as the court composer to the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, and later to his successors Joseph I and Charles VI. In this capacity, he composed a wide array of music, including operas, oratorios, masses, and instrumental works.
