Johann Gottlieb Goldberg

Johann Gottlieb Goldberg

Baroque German Harpsichordist and Composer

Johann Gottlieb Goldberg was a German harpsichordist and composer of the Baroque era, most famous for his association with Johann Sebastian Bach. Born on March 14, 1727, in Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland), Goldberg is often linked to the famous "Goldberg Variations," BWV 988, a work Bach composed for him to play. Although there is some debate about the veracity of this story, it is said that Bach wrote the piece for Count Keyserlingk, who suffered from insomnia, and Goldberg would play it to soothe the Count during his sleepless nights.
