Jeremy Dutcher

Jeremy Dutcher

Wolastoqiyik Indigenous Musician and Activist

Jeremy Dutcher is a classically trained Canadian tenor, composer, musicologist, and member of the Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick. He gained widespread recognition for his album "Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa," released in 2018. This groundbreaking album features post-classical arrangements of traditional Wolastoq songs, which Dutcher reinterpreted after conducting extensive archival research. His work on this album earned him the prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2018, an award given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit. Dutcher's music is known for its unique blend of classical, traditional, and contemporary elements, and he is celebrated for his efforts to revitalize the Wolastoqey language through his art. His contributions to music and Indigenous culture have made him an important figure in Canada's contemporary music scene.
