Celebrated American Mezzo-Soprano

Jan DeGaetani (1933–1989) was an American mezzo-soprano celebrated for her versatile range and interpretive skills, particularly in contemporary classical music and lieder. She was known for her exceptional musicianship and her commitment to performing works by living composers. DeGaetani studied at the Juilliard School and made her professional debut in 1958. Throughout her career, she collaborated with many notable composers, such as George Crumb, whose song cycle "Ancient Voices of Children" she premiered and recorded to much acclaim.
