Illinois Jacquet

Illinois Jacquet

Legendary Jazz Tenor Saxophonist

Illinois Jacquet was a renowned American jazz tenor saxophonist, best known for his influential role in the development of the jazz style known as swing. Born Jean-Baptiste Illinois Jacquet on October 31, 1922, in Broussard, Louisiana, he became famous for his rich, full-bodied tone and innovative use of honking and screeching sounds which would become a hallmark of the R&B saxophone style. Jacquet's career took off after his memorable solo on "Flying Home" with Lionel Hampton's band in 1942, which became one of the first R&B saxophone solos.
