Ignaz Friedman

Ignaz Friedman

Polish classical pianist and composer

Ignaz Friedman (1882–1948) was a Polish pianist and composer, renowned for his exceptional keyboard abilities and contributions to the piano repertoire. Born in Podgórze, near Kraków, he studied music under Hugo Riemann in Leipzig and Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna. Friedman achieved fame for his outstanding technique and deep musicality, which garnered him a reputation as one of the greatest pianists of his time. Although he was less prolific as a composer, he did produce a number of works, including transcriptions and original compositions. His transcriptions often showcased his affinity for the music of earlier composers such as J.S. Bach, whose works he adapted for the modern piano with great skill and artistry. Friedman's career was marked by extensive concert tours throughout Europe, America, and Asia, where his performances were met with critical acclaim. Despite the challenges posed by World War II and declining health in his later years, Friedman's recordings continue to be celebrated for their expressive nuance and technical precision.
