Giovanni Battista Bononcini

Giovanni Battista Bononcini

Baroque Italian Composer and Cellist

Giovanni Battista Bononcini (1670–1747) was an Italian Baroque composer, cellist, and singer, known for his contributions to the development of the cantata, opera, and instrumental music of his time. Born in Modena, he came from a family of musicians and was a contemporary of Arcangelo Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti. Bononcini's career took him across Italy and eventually to London, where he became involved in the Royal Academy of Music and engaged in a famous rivalry with another composer, George Frideric Handel.
