George Antheil

George Antheil

20th-Century American Avant-Garde Composer

George Antheil was an American composer, pianist, author, and inventor whose career spanned several decades in the early to mid-20th century. Born on July 8, 1900, in Trenton, New Jersey, Antheil moved to Europe in the 1920s where he established himself as an avant-garde composer. He was known for his experimental and modernist music, which often incorporated elements of jazz and mechanical sounds. His most famous work is the "Ballet Mécanique," originally conceived as a score for a Dada film by artist Fernand Léger and filmmaker Dudley Murphy.
