Gene Krupa was an influential American jazz and big band drummer, band leader, actor, and composer known for his highly energetic and flamboyant style. Born on January 15, 1909, in Chicago, Illinois, Krupa became one of the most renowned drummers of his era and was pivotal in defining the role of the drum kit in modern music. He began playing professionally in the mid-1920s and by the 1930s had joined Benny Goodman's band, where he became a national sensation with his performance on the hit "Sing, Sing, Sing" at the famous 1938 Carnegie Hall jazz concert.
