Gene Ammons

Gene Ammons

Jazz Tenor Saxophonist Legend

Gene Ammons, also known as "Jug," was an influential American jazz tenor saxophonist, born on April 14, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of renowned boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons. Gene Ammons began his career in the 1940s and quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the jazz world with his robust and soulful tone. He played with the band of Billy Eckstine, which included other future jazz stars like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, contributing to the early development of bebop.
