Pioneering African American Classical Composer

Florence B. Price (1887–1953) was an African American composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher who is recognized as the first African American woman to be acknowledged as a symphonic composer and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, she attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she studied composition and counterpoint. Throughout her career, Price composed a wide range of works, including symphonies, choral compositions, piano pieces, and songs.
