Étienne-Nicolas Méhul

Étienne-Nicolas Méhul

French Classical Composer and Opera Pioneer

Étienne-Nicolas Méhul was a pioneering French composer who is often credited with being one of the key figures in the development of Romantic music in France. Born on June 22, 1763, in Givet, Méhul showed early musical promise and went on to study under influential composers of the time. He is best known for his operas, which were quite popular during his lifetime. His first major success came with the opera "Euphrosine et Coradin" in 1790, but it was his 1791 opera "Stratonice" that truly established him as a significant composer.
