Edward German

Edward German

British Romantic Composer and Conductor

Edward German, born Edward German Jones on February 17, 1862, was a distinguished English composer and conductor during the late Victorian era and the early 20th century. He is best known for his extensive contribution to the genre of light opera and theatrical incidental music. German's career gained significant momentum after he was chosen to complete the score for "The Emerald Isle" following the death of Arthur Sullivan in 1900. His own operettas, such as "Merrie England" (1902) and "Tom Jones" (1907), became very popular in their time and are still occasionally performed today.
