David "Fathead" Newman was an American jazz and rhythm-and-blues saxophonist who made a significant impact on the music scene with his soulful playing and distinctive sound. Born on February 24, 1933, in Corsicana, Texas, Newman grew up in Dallas and went on to study music at Jarvis Christian College. He gained prominence in the 1950s as a key member of Ray Charles's band, where he played tenor saxophone on many of Charles's seminal recordings.
