David Axelrod

David Axelrod

Influential American Jazz-Funk Composer and Producer

David Axelrod (April 17, 1933 – February 5, 2017) was an American composer, arranger, and producer best known for his work in jazz, classical, and R&B music. He began his career as a staff producer for Capitol Records in the 1960s where he worked with artists like Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley. Axelrod's own compositions are noted for their complex arrangements and blending of different musical genres. His work has been widely sampled by hip-hop artists since the 1990s, which brought him renewed attention. His innovative approach to music production and his willingness to push the boundaries of genre made him a revered figure among musicians and producers. Axelrod's albums "Song Of Innocence" (1968) and "Songs Of Experience" (1969) are considered groundbreaking for their fusion of jazz, rock, and classical elements. These works were inspired by the poetry of William Blake and showcased Axelrod's ambitious orchestral compositions. His album "Heavy Axe" (1974) further displayed his eclectic style and featured contributions from jazz-funk luminaries. David Axelrod's influence on later generations of artists underscores his legacy as a pioneering figure in music production.
