Charles Wuorinen

Charles Wuorinen

Pulitzer Prize-Winning American Composer

Charles Wuorinen (June 9, 1938 – March 11, 2020) was an American composer and conductor known for his prolific output and his adherence to the twelve-tone technique, although he did not limit himself strictly to serialism. A leading figure in contemporary classical music, Wuorinen wrote over 270 compositions during his career. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1970 for his electronic piece "Time's Encomium" and was one of the youngest composers to receive the honor at that time.
