Charles-Valentin Alkan

Charles-Valentin Alkan

19th-Century French Piano Virtuoso and Composer

Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813–1888) was a French-Jewish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era. He was a child prodigy, entering the Paris Conservatoire at the age of six and winning many awards. Despite his considerable talent and the high esteem in which he was held by his contemporaries, including Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin, Alkan's music fell into relative obscurity after his death. His compositions are known for their difficulty and complexity, often demanding exceptional technical skill from performers.
