Charles Tolliver

Jazz Trumpeter and Composer

Charles Tolliver is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader. Born on March 6, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida, he has been an influential figure in the jazz scene since the 1960s. Tolliver is known for his powerful tone and innovative compositions. He came to prominence after moving to New York City, where he played with prominent artists such as Jackie McLean and Max Roach. In the late 1960s, he co-founded the Strata-East record label with pianist Stanley Cowell, which became a platform for many artists to produce their own work during a time when opportunities were limited for jazz musicians.
