Cap'N John Handy

Cap'N John Handy

New Orleans Jazz Clarinetist

Captain John Handy (1900–1971) was an influential American jazz alto saxophonist renowned for his work in New Orleans jazz. He was born in Pass Christian, Mississippi, but moved to New Orleans in his youth, where he became an active figure in the city's vibrant music scene. Handy was known for his powerful and expressive playing style, which helped to elevate the role of the saxophone in traditional New Orleans jazz bands, a genre that had previously been dominated by brass instruments and clarinets.
