Arthur Lourié

Arthur Lourié

Russian Avant-Garde Composer and Pianist

Arthur Lourié (1892–1966) was a Russian-born composer, pianist, and music theorist who played a significant role in the early 20th-century avant-garde movement. His early works were influenced by Russian Futurism, and he was associated with major figures of the Russian Silver Age, such as Anna Akhmatova, with whom he collaborated. Lourié's music evolved through various phases, initially showing the influence of Scriabin and later incorporating elements of neoclassicism after his emigration to the West.
