Anton Karas

Anton Karas

Austrian zither musician and composer

Anton Karas was an Austrian zither player and composer, best known for his score for the 1949 film noir "The Third Man." Born on July 7, 1906, in Vienna, Karas was a self-taught musician who initially pursued music as a hobby while working as a civil servant. His career took a significant turn when he was discovered by the film's director, Carol Reed, in a Viennese tavern. Reed was captivated by Karas's playing and decided to use his music for the film's soundtrack.
