Renowned American Cellist and Conductor

Alfred Wallenstein (1898–1983) was an American cellist and conductor. Born in Chicago, he began his musical career as a cellist, playing with the San Francisco Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Wallenstein became one of the most prominent cellists of his time before transitioning to conducting. In 1943, he was appointed as the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a position he held until 1956. During his tenure, he was known for his innovative programming and for championing contemporary music, which helped to elevate the orchestra's reputation.
