Alessandro Grandi

Alessandro Grandi

17th-Century Italian Baroque Composer

Alessandro Grandi was an Italian composer of the early Baroque era, born in the late 16th century and passing away in 1630. He was a significant figure in the development of the Venetian polychoral style, which was pioneered by Giovanni Gabrieli. Grandi served as vice-maestro di cappella at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice under Monteverdi and later became maestro di cappella at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. His compositions include a variety of sacred music such as motets and concertato madrigals, which contributed to the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music. Grandi's works were influential in their time and continue to be performed today, although he is not as widely known as some of his contemporaries like Claudio Monteverdi.
