After last year's successful tour with the band Jelen, during which she received enthusiastic ovations from the audience, among others in the sold-out Forum Karlín, Tereza Balonová comes with her debut EP Zhasni den. Only eighteen years old, the singer with a mesmerizing voice and an exceptional sense of interpretation confirms her extraordinary talent in collaboration with producer Martin Ledvina.
The three tracks on Tereza Balonová's debut EP - In the Quilts, the title track Zhasni den and Neposloucháš - are original, complemented by an impressive duet with singer-songwriter Ales Petržela K nezkrocení. In his studio, producer Martin Ledvina has brought out all her strengths, especially her distinctive voice with a strong emotional colouring and her unprecedented interpretive confidence considering her age.
Her songs radiate such an experience that the listener would expect a seasoned singer behind the microphone, rather than a girl of only eighteen. "Tereza moves smoothly from instrument to instrument and does what she wants with each one, commanding an angelic voice that is unparalleled in its maturity and emotion. Her lyrics immediately drew me in with their depth. Working with such an artist is a privilege and a sheer pleasure," says Martin Ledvina.
In addition to her unique singing qualities, Balonová stands out because she is a talented author and an excellent guitarist. She has been playing her main instrument since the age of six, and at the age of twelve she competed with her first original compositions at the Porta Folk Festival. Five years later she won it for her authentic expression and exceptional talent.
"When my parents took me to a Metallica concert in Eden at the age of eight, it was such a powerful experience for me that I immediately knew what I wanted to do," she recalls. But a performance by the folk band Čechomor had a similarly significant effect on her. "I ran away from my dad and mum and ran into the front row, where I was looking under the musicians' feet to see what they were doing. I wanted to be able to do it too," laughs Balonová, who played volleyball competitively for many years. But the music won out in the end.
At concerts, she makes do on her own with a guitar and a looper - a device that records and layers sounds over each other. "Iwas inspired to use a looper by Ed Sheeran. I saw videos online of what he could do with it and shortly afterwards bought my first basic device with my pocket money. I learnedeverything I needed to know on it," explains the performer as she intuitively works and learns new skills. In time, she also mastered the drums or the keyboard.
She has already toured with the band Jelen, with whom she toured large venues, including Prague's Forum Karlín before Christmas last year. It was this final concert that she says brought her the greatest euphoria. "I will never forget it, it was a dream come true. Suddenly I was the performer standing in front of a full house with everyone looking at his feet."
