Just a few days after Víkingur Ólafsson's latest album Debussy - Rameau was released on Deutsche Grammophon earlier this year, it reached the top of the classical charts in the US and the UK, and reached the top ten in the German pop charts. Now the Icelandic pianist presents Debussy - Rameau Reflections, a contemporary reflection on the music of these two composers. These are settings by Ólafsson and other contemporary artists - including Polish pianist, composer and singer Hania Rani. Ólafsson is contrasted on the album with previously unreleased recordings by Debussy. The Reflections project kicks off on 25 September 2020 with the world premiere of Hania Rani's new arrangement of Prélude to Debussy's La Damoiselle élue, in which the composer's music appears in a meditative electroacoustic soundscape. This single will be followed by four EPs in November, January, February and March, and the album will be released on CD and LP on 12 March 2021. Reflections also features contributions from Icelandic singer-songwriter Helgi Jónsson, Icelandic duo Hugar, Texan minimalist post-rock ensemble Balmorhea and Christian Badzura, Vice President of A&R New Repertoire at Deutsche Grammophon. Also included are Debussy's Pour le piano and pieces from his Préludes. Two of the pieces - "Bruyères" and "Canope" - were recorded for both piano and piano, offering listeners a very different experience. "I wanted to look at some of the works from new angles, reinterpret them and invite other composers to rework elements of these great pieces," Ólafsson says. "Deutsche Grammophon immediately supported me, and we were able to have creative conversations with Debussy, Rameau and some of the most imaginative musicians of our time."
