The Essential Jazz Classics label presents the complete 1956 recording of Nat King Cole's 'After Midnight' Sessions - with 4 bonus tracks. Released at a time when he was more of a singer and entertainer than a jazz pianist to the general public, this album is a reminder of Nat's outstanding instrumental abilities. Throughout the rest of his successful career - which was cut short by his sudden death in 1965 due to lung cancer - he sang more and more and played less and less. This magnificent, mostly instrumental album was to be one of his last hits as a pianist (as opposed to a singer and entertainer), featuring the classic Nat King Cole & his Trio and several of his famous friends as guests : Harry Edison, Willie Smith, Juan Tizol & Stuff Smith The present release includes the complete master takes in their original recording order, allowing the listener to enjoy the music as it was recorded and to fully appreciate the collaboration of Cole's magic with the horns. As a bonus, we present a four-track session featuring Cole performing with the same rhythm section, one year earlier. (freshsoundrecords. com)
