Coverversions Part 1: Folk and country role models The Dead South have used their time in the past to record a number of cover versions. That's why this Canadian folk-bluegrass band is releasing two new cover version EPs in 2022: "Easy Listening For Jerks Part 1 and 2", aptly titled "Carter Family meets Addams Family". Why this is so is clear when you look at the track listing. The musical previews of the double-pack EP show that The Dead South are following very different musical lines: "Easy Listening For Jerks (Part 1)" collects six songs, including a new version of the country classic "You Are My Sunshine," in which The Dead South search for planes of deep despair beneath the surface of the lullaby. Their rendition of "Keep On The Sunny Side," made famous by the Carter Family's 1928 recording, now turns from sweet to somber. "Matterhorn" by the Country Gentlemen in 1968 is an adventure story in which four friends set out to climb a mountain. It also works on the level of a Dead South origin story. "Part 2" shows a completely different side of the band in seven songs. Inspired by the band's own playlist that they listen to before their shows, it features songs from System of a Down, The Doors, Cold War Kids and The Misfits. "Easy Listening For Jerks" is The Dead South's first album to feature all four members, Nathaniel Hilts, Scott Pringle, Colton Crawford and Danny Kenyon, taking turns on lead vocals.
