Product Information:The Black Keys' fifth full-length, Attack & Release, follows their critically acclaimed 2006 debut Magic Potion, which the Chicago Tribune called "a gritty, ferocious, minimalist masterpiece." The LP version includes the album on 12" vinyl, CD and free MP3 download. Produced by Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, The Gorillaz, The Grey Album), Attack & Release was recorded at engineer Paul Hamann's renowned Suma Studio outside Cleveland, Ohio. The original collaboration began when Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) approached the band to write songs for an album he was preparing with the late R&B legend Ike Turner. But when the band began writing songs for Turner early last year, they quickly realized they were actually laying the groundwork for their own new album. Attack & Release thus became The Black Keys' first collaborative effort, which turned into its own album, produced by Danger Mouse. Recording in an actual studio (another first) gave guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney the opportunity to add a variety of instruments to their usual simple lineup - including organ, moog and banjo. "After recording previous albums in the basement, we were ready to go somewhere else," admits Auerbach. "Danger Mouse came in as our collaborator. He has a real feel for melody and arrangement, and that was a big part of this record, as was the studio... a really special place." Carney agrees, "The place is covered in dust, it smells like a moldy cottage, and it looks like a haunted house. For the first time we went into a real studio, it was fitting." He continues, "I think Dan and I were intrigued to work with someone like Paul as a producer and an engineer because we both realised that we couldn't learn anything more on our own and that the best thing to do was to start learning from other people." In addition to Auerbach, Carney and the work of Danger Mouse, Attack & Release also featured guitarist Marc Ribot and multi-instrumentalist Ralph Carney (Patrick's uncle) - both veterans of Tom Waits' band, among others. On the closing track, "Things Ain't Like They Used To Be," Auerbach sings alongside 18-year-old bluegrass and country singer Jessica Lea Mayfield. The Black Keys released four albums before Attack & Release - 2002's The Big Come Up, 2003's Thickfreakness, 2004's Rubber Factory and 2006's Magic Potion.
