In 1980, Talking Heads veterans were somewhat - and pleasantly!! - surprised by this album. Byrne and his team were joined by guitar god Adrian Belew, funk legend Bernie Worrell on keys and Steven Scales on drums. Together with the other players, this resulted in a much fuller and funkier sound than on previous albums. The first three songs are individual dance parties in which musical and lyrical lines are endlessly repeated. Plus, there are absolutely catchy melodies that keep playing in your head even after a few days. "Once in a Lifetime" was a big hit, but the rockiest track is number three, "The Great Curve". Funk dominates the new wave sound of Heads even more than on the previous album "Fear Of Music" and Brian Eno's homogeneous production ensures that "Remain In Light" is seen as a whole, as a unit. Surprisingly, despite the main ingredients - new wave and funk - there is a psychedelic feel to the whole album. The fact that it's so groovy and danceable - despite all the electronic sounds from Eno and synth guitars from Belew - is amazing. 'Remain In Light' is widely regarded as the magnum opus of Talking Heads' output, and even after thirty years it still exudes a huge fascination and freshness. In terms of sound, it has aged well.
