The Story of Light is the twelfth studio album by American guitarist Steve Vai . The album was released on 14 August 2012 and is the second in a trilogy of albums following the release of 2010's The Evolution of a Man. The album was produced by Vai and recorded at his home studio, The Mothership. The album was met with mostly positive reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 73, indicating a "generally favorable rating". Eduardo Rivadavia of AllMusic awarded the album four and a half stars out of five, stating that "The Story of Light is a sweeping, ambitious and ultimately triumphant effort from one of the most unique and talented guitarists in the history of the instrument." The Guardian's Dom Lawson gave the album four stars out of five, saying, "The album is a typically eclectic and ambitious affair, with Vai switching with ease between snappy metal solos, delicate acoustic passages and even a bit of bossa nova." The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and sold over 29,000 copies.
