It's arguably the best and strongest album from a Florida band whose highest law is passion and devotion. Their motivation can be felt in every corner of the eleven songs, and even the softer moments on The Sound Of Madness feel like a fist to the stomach. Co-produced by star producer Rob Cavallo, the record delivers the concentrated power of the ultimate SHINEDOWN album, with their US platinum-selling debut Leave A Whisper (2003) and follow-up album Us And Them (2005, Gold). "I said to Rob, 'When I'm dead and everyone in this band is history, I want the world to remember The Sound Of Madness as the album that needed to be made,' that's the motivation for this album," says singer and frontman Brent Smith. "And it's also the reason it took so long to produce." Drummer Barry Kerch, with whom Smith formed the band in Florida in 2001, is particularly pleased with the sound. "We wanted to make a statement," he explains. "We wanted the album to be larger than life - a rock album that says, 'Okay, we're back.' This is our third album, and that's what we're going for." The album's bolder sound is reflected in SHINEDOWN's new lineup, which has grown to a quintet featuring guitarist Nick Perri (ex-Silvertide), bassist Eric Bass and guitarist Zach Myers. "These guys are great musicians," Smith marvels to this day. "SHINEDOWN have reinvented themselves and are much stronger." "I look at SHINEDOWN as a separate entity," Smith concludes. "It evolves on its own, like a heartbeat. It's not a machine, it has real blood flowing through it. Since we started it, it's like it's been guiding us and flowing through us. It's a little crazy - but also amazing."
