With this audiophile edition, Deutsche Grammophon pays tribute to the legendary recordings of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphonies 1-6 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Herbert von Karajan's death. In addition to 4 CDs, the high-quality edition also includes a 24-bit / 96kHz remastering on Blu-ray disc. Although Karajan recorded the last three symphonies many times with the Berlin Philharmonic, he refrained from recording Symphonies 1-3 until the late 1970s. The reason why these early symphonies sound so fresh is undoubtedly because the Berlin Philharmonic played this repertoire much less frequently; of particular note are the finely honed subtleties of the orchestral sound. The cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic under Karajan, recorded at the Philharmonie from October 1975 to February 1979, is supplemented on Blu-ray Audio Disc by the Slavonic March and Capriccio italien, both recorded in October 1966 at the Church of Jesus Christ. The first-class boxed edition is accompanied by a 32-page booklet with an essay by Thomas Kohlhas in English and German.
