For many years, only an abridged 12-track version was available on 1CD, missing the tracks "The Rhythm of the Heat!", "Not One of Us", "Intruder" and "On the Air". The reissue uses the original iconic cover artwork in a new graphic design by longtime Peter Gabriel designer Marc Bessant. "Plays Live" was compiled from live recordings made in late 1982 at four locations in the Midwestern United States. It is actually the conclusion of the first stage of Peter Gabriel's solo career. As such, it is a celebration of all that was achieved on the first quartet of LPs, and a confirmation that Peter was a dedicated and engaging frontman. The recordings feature contributions from Peter, Jerry Marrotta (drums and percussion), Tony Levin (bass and drumstick), David Rhodes (guitar) and Larry Fast (synthesizer and piano). The iconic picture of Peter with the "monkey mask" on the cover was taken by Armando Gallo, his longtime collaborator.
