The award-winning Icelandic pop/classical musician Ólafur Arnalds has always been deeply moved by Chopin's piano music, but he grew increasingly tired of the sameness and standardized "perfection" of the respective recordings. Therefore, he grew a desire to approach Chopin differently, with his own recorded interpretation. "Why should we use the technology at our disposal only as an instrument and not also as a means of interpretation? Why shouldn't microphones, space - sound - also participate in the performance?" In collaboration with the outstanding German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott, the Chopin Project was born. Selecting Chopin's compositions, Arnalds sketched the emotional arc for this CD and composed intermezzi for string quintet (piano) and synthesizer inspired by the atmosphere and themes of these pieces. In the production, Ott and Arnalds created an intimate, fragile and often charmingly imperfect sound using old, unusual or prepared pianos recorded with old-fashioned recording equipment. The result is a unique musical contemplation of Chopin's work performed by two exceptional artists.
