It is based on the story of the same name, 'From the Thousand and One Nights', in which a young woman, Scheherazade, escapes from the threat of execution by her husband, the Sultan Shahriar, by telling him exciting stories. Rimsky-Korsakov set this frame story to music in his composition. The play of motifs shows how Scheherazade invents her characters and tames the cruel Sultan. "Scheherazade" is both an exhibition piece for orchestra and a breathtaking showcase for virtuoso soloists.
