"I think Sola Gratia is one of the best albums I've ever made." A strong statement for any musician, but an extraordinary statement from the versatile singer-songwriter Neal Morse, who is considered one of progressive rock's most talented artists. Sola Gratia was first born in his head and continued to develop into concrete form in an inspiring environment: "Several people suggested I make a progressive concept album based on the Apostle Paul. When I was on a cruise from Australia to New Zealand in January 2020, I woke up with a lot of musical ideas that reminded me of this concept. I then went out on deck with my keyboard to flesh out these basic ideas at dawn. When I returned from the cruise, I was excited about the new material and decided to continue working on the project. Sola Gratia was born." The album was recorded "virtually" in April 2020, at the height of the Corona Lockdown project, in collaboration with Mike Portnoy (drums) and Randy George (bass): "It's the first album we've recorded independently. I sent them the basic tracks and asked them if they wanted to change anything. But they just said, "No, it's great like this." So they just played their part and sent it on. On the one hand, it wasn't an easy album to make, but on the other hand, making an album always presents you with unexpected challenges."
