The older some things get, the better they get. Mark Knopfler, born on 12 August 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland, is undoubtedly one of them. After his meteoric career in Dire Straits and various other projects (including scores for films like "Last Exit To Brooklyn", "Wag The Dog") and two solo albums ("Golden Heart", 1996; "Sailing To Philadelphia", 2000), this exceptional guitarist and charismatic singer certainly has nothing to prove to anyone. That's why his new album "The Ragpicker's Dream" sounds relaxed and stylistically somewhat unexpected. And the title says it all, as there is a ragtime feel, blues and songwriter material. All 12 songs are very acoustic - there's a lot of fingerpicking, acoustic guitars, dobro sounds, mandolin, fiddle here and there, lots of slide guitar (acoustic and electric), etc..... "Why Aye Man" is a pretty convincing example. Great, happy song "on the road" with lots of dobro, slide guitar and Knopfler's typical Stratocaster sounds. And if you listen carefully, you can hear a German word here and there - besides the important statements like "German beer is chemistry-free"... Just in time for a hopefully compensating beautiful Indian summer.
