It was produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, who also contributed backing vocals. The album was recorded at Reznor's studio in New Orleans, Louisiana in early 1995. Smells Like Children was conceived as an EP of "dark and disturbing" children's songs, but evolved into a full-length album. The album's lyrics are written from the perspective of a child and are often violent and sexual in nature. It features guest appearances by Reznor, John 5 and Ginger Fish. The album Smells Like Children was met with mixed reviews from music critics, but was commercially successful, debuting at number thirty-eight on the Billboard 200. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping one million copies in the United States.
