As a band, you need above average songwriting skills to make an album sound like a cohesive whole, even if all the songs are saturated with a huge amount of different details and idiosyncrasies. Gothenburg's Manimal, formed in 2001, has achieved this success for the third time. Already their previous albums The Darkest Room (2009) and Trapped In The Shadows (2015) were prime examples of modern and forward-looking power metal that teems with playfulness and a multitude of ideas. On their latest album, Purgatorio, the four-piece band take their extraordinary qualities to the brink of perfection: in nine songs, the musicians fire with all weapons, changing the tempo and mood of the songs and delivering choruses that can be categorized as "anthemic" without exception. "Our goal has always been to write songs we love and believe in. The biggest challenge is to compose numbers with strong hooks without sounding predictable. It's just a bonus for us when people around the world seem to have the same good taste in music as we do," jokes frontman Samuel Nyman.
