Before the Queen of Pop releases her new studio album "MDNA" at the end of March, it's worth taking a compact tour of her eleven previous albums, whose worldwide sales of over 200 million copies were enough to enter the Guinness Book of World Records - from her self-titled debut to "Hard Candy". She couldn't really sing, could she? And when those early nude photos reappeared in Playboy and Penthouse... After these sultry hip-hop beats, this "best of all possible pop Madonnas" (Rolling Stone) proved her versatility two years later with "Bedtime Stories". Her sixth album also established her as a great interpreter of ballads and yielded one of her most successful singles, the US No. 1 "Take A Bow". But Madonna was even better in 1998. Not only had she, along with producer William Orbit, musically transformed herself towards ambient house in songs like "Frozen": "Ray Of Light" brought her four Grammys (including Best Pop and Dance Album), after long being rather ignored at America's most important music awards. The new millennium opened with a cover version of Don McLean's classic "American Pie" - her first German No. 1 single since 1987's "La Isla Bonita" - and was followed by the electronic-oriented "Music," on which Madonna collaborated with French underground DJ Mirwais. In 2003, she took a stand against then US President Bush Jr. and the Iraq War on "American Life". But even the radio boycott couldn't stop singles like "Die Another Day" on their way to the top of the US sales charts. Two years later, not even a horse riding accident with a broken collarbone and ribs stopped the now 47-year-old Madonna from making a triumphant return to the clubs and discos of this world with "Confessions On A Dance Floor". The monster single "Hung Up" (featuring a sample of the Abba classic "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!"), which also received an "Echo" award, topped the charts in at least 41 countries. After being voted the third most influential person in the world by Forbes magazine, making her debut as a film director with "Filth And Wisdom" and being inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, Madonna worked exclusively with American producers on "Hard Candy" for the first time since 1994. Timbaland and Justin Timberlake provided the R'n'B feel and hip hop grooves. It was the first album that didn't even need to have her name on the cover to go to number one on the charts in at least 37 countries. "Hard Candy" was also her tenth number one album in Germany.
