Madonna is an album by American singer-songwriter Madonna , released on July 27, 1983 by Sire Records. It was her debut studio album and was produced by Reggie Lucas. After Madonna signed a recording contract with Sire, she began working with Lucas on the album. The album's lyrical content was inspired by her personal experiences and the work of American poet Allen Ginsberg. Musically, Madonna is a pop album that contains elements of dance, funk and rock. The album was well received by music critics, who praised Madonna's vocal performance and called the album a strong debut. It was also commercially successful, reaching number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album spawned three singles, "Holiday", "Borderline" and "Lucky Star". Madonna is cited as an influence by many artists and several publications have ranked it among the best albums of all time.
