The five string trios are the young Ludwig van Beethoven's masterpiece on the road to the string quartet - although many musicians and scholars prefer the mature trios of Op. 9 to the string quartets of Op. 18 that follow. The Jacques Thibaud String Trio on this double CD offers an opportunity to rediscover these milestones in string trio history. After the successful release of the string trios of Crassus, Reger, Dohnányi and Kodály, the Jacques Thibaud String Trio now turns its attention to the classics with a new audite of the complete Beethoven string trios. Sometimes one wonders why some genres make it into the pantheon of music history while others are still considered "insider tips." The string quartet undoubtedly belongs in the former category, the string trio - despite brilliant works such as Mozart's Divertimento KV 563 or Beethoven's string trios - in the latter. The Trio for violin, viola and cello is considered tonally sparse and compositionally neglected. In Beethoven's case, the reverse is true: the trio was the young Beethoven's touchstone for his mastery of writing 'without the piano', which led him to composition: He left behind five trios in which he initially followed the tradition of the divertimento and the entertaining serenades of Op. 3 and Op. 8, but interpreted them in a completely new and sophisticated way. With the Trio Op. 9 of 1796-98 he then exhibited his calling card as a composer for strings. Here we find all the hallmarks of a mature composer: amazing sonority, a sense of character and personality in the three instruments, a work with several concise themes, drama and sensuality.
