The 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's birth in 2020 will bring many enjoyable musical events. One of them is a new production, in which the brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon are again involved after a long time. Both are accomplished soloists in their respective fields and have impressive discographies - their artistic agent is pianist Frank Braley. Together they dedicate their new album to two of the great classical pianist's most famous piano trios. The "Ghost Trio" and the "Archduke Trio": both works show how Beethoven - as in his string quartets - took chamber music out of the narrow realm of domestic music and developed the genre into an equal direction with concertos and symphonies. In doing so, he expands the expressive framework of the Trio Op. 70 No. 1, in whose slow movement we suddenly find ourselves in a gloomy nocturnal atmosphere from which the listener is only rescued by the almost orchestral finale. The Trio Op. 97 - Beethoven's last contribution to the piano trio genre, which he dedicated to his distinguished pupil Archduke Rudolf of Habsburg - is characterised by its almost symphonic soundscapes and highly virtuosic piano part. The premiere of the work, which is quite large and lasts over 40 minutes, in 1814 was one of the last performances of Beethoven, who had to withdraw from concert life due to his increasing deafness. The pieces on the Capuçon brothers' new album are therefore also milestones in Beethoven's biography.
