Beethoven's piano sonatas belong to the standard piano repertoire. The three sonatas "Moonlight Sonata", "Appassionata" and "Pathétique" are legendary and still the most popular. We first encounter it in a superb recording by pianist Peter Rössel. "When I was asked by the production company Eterna to record these three famous Beethoven sonatas in the late 1970s, I had to think about it for a while before I accepted the offer. After all, I had to compete with a record of exactly the same pieces that had already been published in the GDR. The performer was Wilhelm Kempff, so the bar was quite high for a young pianist. Nevertheless, the decision was made and I accepted the challenge. Without wishing to be immodest, I can say that I was quite satisfied with the result and still am to this day.
