These recordings of two of Beethoven's symphonies date from the time of the upheaval in the Berlin Philharmonic. Furtwängler was officially chief conductor again, but for health and personal reasons he could not permanently supervise the orchestra. From his first encounter with the Berlin Philharmonic, Herbert von Karajan wanted nothing more than to become its principal conductor. Recordings bear witness to his early collaboration with the orchestra, both as a guest and as Wilhelm Furtwängler's successor. Karajan's first post-war concert with the orchestra, Beethoven's 'Eroica' on 8 September 1953, shows the state of the orchestra, but also what he was able to achieve as a conductor in this situation. Karajan had previously worked mainly with the London Philharmonic and was impressed by its virtuosity. With the Berlin Philharmonic, however, he found dimensions that went beyond virtuosity, an expression that extended beyond rehearsed performances. By the time the Ninth was recorded (on 25 April 1957 in the concert hall of the Hochschule für Musik on the occasion of the orchestra's 75th birthday), Karajan was already chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. The orchestra was still in a rebuilding phase, with Karajan trying to adapt the tonal orientation of the orchestra to his musical conception. Beethoven's Ninth with a solo quartet of rare quality shows that Karajan was already on his way to the first complete recording of symphonies with a broad formal breath and a tightly bound sound. The orchestra was in a phase of tedious reshaping, caused by Karajan's desire to shape the orchestra's sound according to his musical philosophy. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, featuring an outstanding quartet of vocal soloists, is characterized by a great command of form and a dense, cohesive sound that reveals Karajan to be well on his way to his first complete recording of the symphonies.
