Beethoven's cello works (sonatas and variations) were composed between 1797 and 1817. Already the first two sonatas, opus 5, testify to the great importance the young composer attached to these compositions. Opus 5 was certainly ahead of its time and, like the Sonata Pathetica, already expresses a very distinctive and revolutionary style. The undisputed masterpiece of maturity is Op. 69 of 1808, which is unanimously considered his masterpiece for this instrumentation. The last two sonatas of Op. 102 (1815) are already part of Beethoven's mystical and experimental period, culminating in the last abstract string quartets. The variations he produced during these 20 years are beautiful compositions with no experimental or progressive character. Pierre Fournier recorded these works twice: in 1967 with Wilhelm Kempff and for the first time in 1959 (heard here) with Friedrich Gulda. Very good sound quality.
