To mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Deutsche Grammophon is releasing this legendary recording on two LPs in a high-quality 180g Optimal pressing. Leonard Bernstein was not only a committed and engaging musician, but also a politically committed man who never shied away from making clear statements to push for changes that were important to him. That is why he immediately agreed to participate when Justus Frantz suggested that he conduct Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Christmas: he was united in music, which has always been one of the arts that has contributed most significantly to understanding between peoples. Leonard Bernstein's intention in performing Beethoven's most famous symphony was not so much to commemorate a political event, but, as he put it, to celebrate a holiday, 'the joyous feast of human freedom'.
